A Spoonful of Beekeeper Honey

Apiaculture or beekeeping is becoming popular. Backyard beekeeping is no longer limited to the houses located in the country areas; urban beekeepers are growing in numbers too.

Guide books and other informative materials are readily available to those who want to start the hobby of taking care of bees. There are a lot of things to know before you become a good beekeeper. Honey is the best reward that you can get out of beekeeping.

Understanding the behavioral patterns of bees is not enough to get you into beekeeping. You need to know the needed supplies and equipment to begin building your own beehives. In case you just want to buy second hand beehives, there are also a lot of things that you should know before acquiring one.

Beehives are the first things you must have to start beekeeping. Choose the appropriate beehives; you can either build your own beehive which is actually much cheaper. Top Bar Hive is the most common beehive used by beginners. This is because it does not require so much work and is less complicated compared to other types of beehives.

Aside from the hives, the beekeeping suit is also important. Even bee experts still wear protective gears to protect them from possible attacks by the bees. No matter how well you know the behaviors of your colonies, you are still prone to bee stings once you get near their hives. It is a natural instinct for the bees to guard their honey from predators.

The beekeeping suit would include the beekeeping overall jumpsuit, hat with veil and gloves. It can be uncomfortable to the beekeepers but it is for their own good. Bee stings can be dreadful especially to those who are allergic to bee stings. Most suits are light colored; this is because the predators are usually dark and furry. This will make it easier for the beekeeper to come near the hives.

Bee smoker is also vital beekeeping equipment. The smoker helps in calming the behavior of the bees and keeps them away from the hive while you are getting your share of beekeeper honey. The smoker also helps in masking the pheromones released by the guard bees, making it easier for the beekeeper to harvest the honey without worrying about being swarmed by bees.

The sweet taste of honey is appreciated after harvest time. Read books and ask people who are also into this hobby to learn more and understand the basics of beekeeping.
